Location

The new (2022) glamorous hotel Umilta is located on Via dell'Umilta and is a stone's throw from the Trevi Fountain, right in the heart of the sites covered in our 3-day Rome itinerary. As you approach the property, you know you are about to walk into an oasis away from the droves of crowds pushing towards the fountain. A door attendant is always present and ready to assist.

The interior of the hotel feels like a swanky lounge with dark hues and velvety textures. Check-in is typical at a 5-star property in Italy with a meet and greet and hotel tour. The central location is its selling point. All the major sites are within easy walking distance and the views from rooms and the rooftop bounce around the major monuments. My shower had a perfect view of the Victor Emmanuel monument.

The aesthetic of the hotel marries contemporary style with neo-classical details. Wandering around the hotel's intimate spaces, the walls are alive with lovely artworks curated specifically for the hotel's interiors, and it is no surprise that the hotel also doubles as an art gallery.

The Neighborhood

Umilta 36 sits on Via dell'Umiltà, a quiet side street that puts you a genuinely short walk from Rome's biggest hitters. The Trevi Fountain is essentially around the corner, the Pantheon is only a couple of blocks to the west, and the shopping stretch of Via del Corso is close enough for an easy pre-dinner wander. Rome Termini station is roughly a twenty minute walk away, so while we always recommend a car or taxi for arriving with luggage, it is entirely walkable once you are settled in. Do note that, like much of central Rome, the streets immediately around the hotel are cobblestone, so pack accordingly if you are prone to rolling a suitcase or navigating in heels.

The hotel is part of the Shedir Collection and a member of Preferred Hotels & Resorts, memberships that generally signal a consistent standard of independent luxury service, which matches our experience here.

Rooms

The Umilta has 28 rooms and 19 apartments. All are decorated with a mix of warm woods and marble. The bathrooms are spacious and bright. It was probably the most beautiful amenities kit I have ever found in a hotel bathroom, complete with wooden handles on the toothbrushes and razors.

The rooms are very spacious unlike many other properties in Rome. For a full overview of the differences between hotels, apartments, and other options, see our Italy accommodation types guide. We opted for an apartment which was perfect for a family. Our apartment had a living room and bedroom with two large flat screen televisions and gorgeous views of the city. This luxury hotel has many options for solo travelers, couples, and large families.

Amenities

The Umilta 36 has a 24-hour fitness room which you may need after indulging in the hotel's fine dining.

The Dandy Café is open all day for light meals, snacks, and of course aperitivi.

Aquamarina is the hotel's restaurant focused on seafood.

El Porteno Gourmet is located next door at Umilta 37 and boasts a sophisticated menu based on Argentinian cuisine. Both restaurants are solid choices for a non-traditional Italian night out, alongside destinations like Ristorante All'Oro if you want a proper Michelin-starred evening in the city.

The Verdict

In my opinion, the Umilta felt luxurious the moment we walked inside. The staff were attentive and considerate. Breakfast was exceptional and worth the additional cost.

I must make a note of our early morning departure. They offered us breakfast boxes knowing we were leaving at an untimely hour. Usually, you get a small yogurt, water, and pastry to go. At check out, the staff gave us 2 large shopping bags full of every kind of pastry you could imagine, beautifully packaged in small gift boxes. Although we could not eat everything, the attention to detail in this small deed was fitting for the entire experience.

This is a true 5-star property in the heart of Rome's historical center, and I cannot wait to return to this amazing hotel.

Practical Logistics

Umilta 36 does not have a dedicated on-site parking garage of its own given the tight footprint of central Rome, so ask the hotel in advance about valet arrangements or nearby garage options if you are arriving by car; most guests are better off arriving by taxi or private transfer directly from Fiumicino or Ciampino airport. Two rooms are wheelchair accessible, though it is worth knowing that the building's entrance has a small step and the surrounding streets carry Rome's characteristic uneven cobblestones, so travelers with significant mobility needs should discuss access with the hotel directly before booking. Small pets are welcome for an additional nightly fee, which is a nice touch for travelers who bring a dog along on longer stays.

Who This Hotel Suits

The mix of compact rooms and full apartments makes Umilta 36 unusually flexible. Couples looking for a glamorous, design-forward base will love the standard rooms, while families or small groups traveling together will appreciate the apartments, which give everyone a bit of breathing room after a long day of sightseeing. Because the hotel sits directly in the thick of the historic center, it particularly suits first-time visitors to Rome who want to walk everywhere and never think twice about transport. Travelers who prefer a quieter, more residential base might instead look toward neighborhoods like Prati or Monti.

Seasonal Guidance

The area around the Trevi Fountain is one of the most heavily trafficked corners of Rome at almost any time of year, so don't expect a quiet piazza outside your door in high season. That said, the hotel itself is a genuine retreat once you step through the door. If you can, aim for shoulder season, roughly April to early June or September through October, for a calmer version of the neighborhood and typically better room availability. Summer brings the heaviest crowds and heat, though the hotel's design keeps interiors feeling cool and composed even when the streets outside are packed.

Pairing Your Stay

Umilta 36 makes an ideal base for a Rome itinerary built around walking. For a special night out, book a table at Ristorante All'Oro near Piazza del Popolo, or stay closer to home and let the hotel's own restaurants handle dinner. If your trip continues on to Florence, pair this stay with The Calimala, a similarly design-driven boutique hotel in the heart of that city.
