As summer inches closer, so do our departure dates for Italy. June through September is very high season in Italy. The Amalfi Coast is probably one of the most visited locations in Italy and everyone wants a piece of the jaw-dropping views, fresh seafood, and the myriad of sites to behold.
Although the southern coast has its well-deserved allure, the crowds that now begin as early as April and go through the end of October can put a wrench in your experience. Post-covid travel has changed the way I travel in the summer and so I would like to give you some advice on how to get the picture-perfect holiday you have been craving.
1. Book Your Accommodations Early
If you think you are going to book a fantastic hotel with all of the bells and whistles a few months in advance, I assure you this will be difficult and very expensive. Amalfi Coast hotel prices in the summer are extreme compared to other cities in Italy, and the rooms that accommodate families and have sea views are usually ones booked first.
2. Prepare for Crowds in Major Towns
Although cities like Sorrento and Amalfi are fantastic places to stay logistically (both have decent connections to other cities and sites), they are extremely crowded. Buses, trains, and ferries will be very full so either start your day very early or consider a car or a private driver.
3. Stay Outside the Town Centers
Packed streets and even more packed restaurants may be off-putting to many who are seeking a relaxing holiday. Consider staying in Minori, Sant'Agnello, or Praiano. You will find fantastic hotels at a less expensive rate (many have their own private beaches), fewer tourist trap restaurants, and a more authentic Italian experience.
Personal recommendation: Sant'Agnello is a few blocks from Sorrento. This summer I stayed at the Parco Dei Principi di Sorrento. It is a 5-star hotel with spectacular views, great service, private beach and pool. The grounds are beautiful and I was pleasantly surprised by the food at the beach restaurant by the water. Rooms are simple but the sea views are worth their weight in gold. We walked 20 minutes to get to the center of Sorrento. This hotel was half the price of 5-star properties located 10 minutes closer to the city center. We had peace and quiet and rarely encountered huge crowds.
4. Prioritize a Private Boat Day
If I were to give one piece of advice to anyone visiting the Amalfi Coast it would be to prioritize your funds for memorable experiences. Imagine, for 8 hours having your own private boat with a captain who will take you just about anywhere. Swimming in the sea, sipping cocktails, and being able to explore hard to get to spots along the coast is something a ferry cannot do. Capri, Positano, and Massa Lubrense all have sophisticated beach clubs that a private boat can drop you at for lunch, lounging in the sun, and people watching. This is a great way to avoid the massive crowds.
5. Hire a Private Guide for Pompeii
The archaeological site of Pompeii is spectacular and the perk of having a private tour is that you can see more and not be beholden to a group as you combat the heat and crowds. A private guide can spend time where you want to spend time and focus on your must-see spots.
Practical tip: Pompeii is incredibly hot in the summer so a collapsible water bottle and electrolyte packets are an easy fix. Although there is a cafe located within the archaeological park, it can be very crowded waiting for water and bathrooms. Instead, before meeting your guide, walk directly across the street from the park's entrance to grab breakfast or water. The small diner across the way also has exceptionally clean bathrooms located in the back. There are also bathrooms in the ticketing area but the lines are very long.
